Vacancies at a five-year low: what small-firm caution means for you

The UK's statistics body says job vacancies are at their lowest level in five years, and small firms are a big part of the story — many are citing labour and operating costs as reasons to hold off on hiring.

This isn't a dramatic collapse, but it is a squeeze. Fewer roles being posted means more competition per vacancy, and it means employers — especially smaller ones — are being more careful about who they bring in, because each hire costs more relative to their budget.

What this means if you're applying now

A tighter market doesn't mean you can't get hired. It means the bar for standing out is a bit higher, and small businesses in particular will be looking for people who can prove they're worth the cost — not just people who look qualified on paper.

  • Fewer vacancies means more applicants per role, so generic applications get lost faster than usual
  • Small firms hiring cautiously will favour candidates who can show immediate, practical value
  • Longer hiring processes and slower responses are more likely when budgets are tight
  • Roles may be redefined or combined, so job descriptions might ask for a broader mix of skills than before

What to actually do about it

When hiring slows, the temptation is to apply to more jobs, faster. That usually backfires — a scattergun approach with a generic CV is exactly what gets filtered out when there are more applicants to choose from.

Instead, narrow your focus and go deeper on fewer applications. For each role, be specific about the problem the employer is likely trying to solve by hiring, and make sure your CV speaks directly to that — particularly if you're applying to a small business, where the hire matters more per head and cost-consciousness is real.

  • Prioritise quality over volume in your applications
  • Lead with outcomes and cost/time savings you've delivered, not just duties
  • Be ready to explain your value in plain terms — small firms won't have time to guess
  • Keep some applications going even during a quiet patch; hiring does still happen, just more selectively

A slower market, not a closed one

Vacancy numbers moving down is a real signal worth noting, but it's not a reason to panic or stop applying. It's a reason to be sharper about where and how you apply.
