Small firms are hiring less: what it means for you
The ONS says job vacancies have fallen, and small firms in particular are pointing to labour costs as a reason to slow down hiring. That's worth noting if a big chunk of your search has been aimed at small and medium-sized employers.
What this actually means
It doesn't mean nobody's hiring. It means the pool of open roles at smaller companies may be shrinking a bit, and the ones that do exist are likely to be more carefully considered before they're filled. When hiring is expensive and uncertain, employers tend to be pickier, slower to decide, and more cautious about taking a risk on someone who doesn't look like an obvious fit on paper.
That changes the odds slightly. Fewer vacancies generally means more competition per role. It also tends to mean longer hiring processes, as employers weigh up whether they really need to fill a post or can get by without it.
What to do about it
- Widen your net rather than narrowing it. Don't rely solely on small businesses if that's been your main target — mix in medium and larger employers too.
- Make the cost case for yourself. If budgets are tight, show clearly how you'd save time, reduce errors, or bring in revenue — not just what your job title was.
- Expect slower responses. A quiet inbox right now is less likely to be about you personally and more about hiring decisions taking longer across the board.
- Keep some applications warm with smaller, growing firms too — contraction isn't universal, and some small businesses are still hiring selectively.
A practical mindset shift
In a tighter market, generic applications do worse, not better. Employers who are hiring reluctantly want to be convinced quickly that you're low-risk and high-value. That means your CV needs to work harder: specific, relevant, and clearly tied to what the role actually needs — not a broad summary of your career to date.
None of this is a reason to panic. Vacancy numbers move around for lots of reasons, and this is one data point, not a verdict on your job prospects. But it's a sensible moment to tighten up how you apply rather than simply applying more.
